Tips and Tricks in Universe Image Creator

Tip:  Don't like something?  Choose the "Select" tool, draw a box around the object(s) you don't like and then click on the "Clear" tool. This will leave a black square in your image.  Choose the Starfield tool, and click inside the box a few times to create a starfield that should blend with the rest of your universe.  You can also use the unlimited "Undo/Redo" commands while you are creating your Universe.

Tip:    How do I change the image size?   When creating a new image, pull down the File Menu and choose "New".  The "Set Image Size" window appears.   Either select a predefined size or create your own custom size by entering it in the following format:  width x height.  For example, 300 x 75 would be a good banner.  If you want to find out what a particular size would be, simply choose the select tool and draw a box.  The dimensions are listed on the bottom task bar.   The numbers at the far right are the dimensions of the box (width, height).   Size the box you like and then just plug in those dimensions as your next image size.

Other Features:

Tip:     Universe Image Creator (IC) can operate on any size bitmaps. The only limit is the amount of memory in your system.   When you select File/New you are given a list of image sizes. You can select one of these or enter a custom size in the combo box. Enter the size as widthxheight, e.g 192x112.  The filesize depends on the file type chosen when saving your file.  Choose JPEG to create the smallest files.  24bit bitmap images are the largest.  To calculate 24-bit bitmap filesize, multiply width times height times 3.

Tip:    Universe IC has the ability to Paste bitmaps from the clipboard as well as a bitmap file. When pasting using the "Paste File..."  selection under the Edit menu, you can hold down the SHIFT key and a ‘transparent paste’ will be performed. This allows you to create a library of space effects and use them in later images. The transparent color is set in the Transparent Paste dialog under Edit/Options. You can also specify a tolerance around the transparent color. Frequently, what appears to be a solid color such as black to the naked eye is actually a small value such as RGB(5, 5, 5). With the tolerance setting these colors will be treated as transparent as well. For example, if you set your transparent color to black - RGB(0, 0, 0) and your tolerance to RGB(5, 5, 5), then all colors less than RGB(5, 5, 5) will be treated as transparent.
