Paint objects are used to draw path and text graphics. The four types of paint objects are colors, gradients, patterns and textures. See the section below for descriptions of each type of paint object. The Solid Color, Gradient, Pattern and Texture inspectors provide editors for each type of paint object. Solid colors can also be edited using the standard color picker. Intaglio uses paint wells to allow you to edit colors. A paint well can contain a solid color, a color gradient, a pattern or texture, although not all of these options are possible in all situations (e.g., gradients and patterns can only be used with paths or text blocks). Click in a paint well to open the editor for the solid color, gradient, pattern or texture in the well. For solid colors this will open the standard color picker unless the option key is down, which opens the Solid Color editor instead. You can also drag a paint object to the well from another paint well, or drag graphics to a well to create a pattern.
Select the color space and use the sliders to set the exact color and opacity values. You can also click in the spectrum bar to select a color directly. To create a gradient select the color space and gradient type, and do the following.
Patterns are small drawings drawn repeatedly side by side to form a tile pattern. Use the standard drawing tools to create the pattern in the panel on the right side of the inspector window. You can also copy graphics from a standard drawing and paste them into the pattern or create an entire pattern by dragging graphics into a paint well or using the Convert To Pattern command. Patterns can include a background color, or the background can be transparent. By setting the color in the pattern editor's foreground paint well you can apply a color to either the fill or stroke of the graphics used in the pattern. Pattern properties include the size of the pattern and the distance to step after drawing each pattern tile. You also can select tiling options, opacity, and whether or not to scale the pattern with the graphics it is attached to. Textures are paint objects that draw some type of graphic. The three types of textures are image, light and paint. A texture can be used to paint graphics directly, or can serve as a source image for a CoreImage effect.
