A drawing in Intaglio is a composite of one or more layers that may each contain graphics. Layers can be used as a means to draw many graphics together and maintain them as a collection. For example, if you were to draw different parts of a complex image on separate clear plastic sheets you could stack the sheets together to view the entire drawing or remove certain sheets to view part of the whole. Intaglio layers work the same way. You can put parts of a drawing on separate layers and rearrange the layers or choose not to use some of them at a particular time.
The layer selected in the list (e.g., the "Text" layer) is the active layer where any new graphics will be added to the drawing. To make a different layer active just select it. The names of any layers containing selected graphics (e.g., the "Line Art" layer) will be shown in bold text. The layers list contains three columns. When clicking in a list item it is important to click in the appropriate column. The first two columns in the list show the visible and locked states of each layer in addition to the layer name. Invisible layers aren't displayed when editing and the graphics in locked layers can't be edited. To change the visible and locked states of a layer, click in the appropriate column of the layer entry. The active layer can't be locked and must be visible. In the image above all layers are visible except "Guides" and all layers are unlocked except "Photos". Layers are drawn from the bottom of the list to the top. In other words the layer at the bottom of the list will be drawn under all others. One exception is that all guides from any layer are drawn together over any graphics regardless of layer. To rearrange the order in which a layer is drawn, drag that layer's list entry up or down to a new position in the list. To change a layer's name or other settings double click on that layer's list entry. Layer Settings
