Anritsu TraceView 4.0 - README DOCUMENT

TraceView is software designed to exhibit a subset of
the functionality found in Anritsu NetWorks/OTDR software. This
software is for evaluation use only and is not supported by
Anritsu Instrument Company. For more information about Anritsu
software products, please contact your local sales representative.

INSTALLING SOFTWARE on WINDOWS NT 4.0+ / 2000 / XP

TraceView comes as a zip-compressed file. Unzipping this file
into a directory reveals the SETUP.EXE program. You may browse
to this file location and launch this file by double clicking
or use the RUN dialog box in the START MENU. It is important
that SETUP.EXE is run to install the software. The installation
software will verify the existence of necessary files, without
these files TraceView will not run properly.

PROGRAM HELP AND LANGUAGE SELECTION

After installation, TraceView will attempt to use the current computer
language for program dialogs and help. However, if TraceView does not
support the current computer language then English is used.

Use the following procedure to change language:

1. Run TraceView.
2. From the program menu bar, select FILE>PREFERENCES.
3. From the Preferences dialog box, select the Language page.
4. Select the desired Program and Help languages from the drop-down
   lists and click OK.
5. Exit and rerun TraceView to use the selected language.

GETTING STARTED

TraceView uses the concept of a TRACE LIST to organize trace files.
A TRACE LIST allows the user to group and organize trace files
in a user customized manner. You may wish to group trace files
from a certain date, or from a specific cable. The TRACE LIST
concept allows this to happen.

When starting TraceView the user must decide whether to open an
existing TRACE LIST or create a new TRACE LIST. When the program
is launched these options are available as toolbar icons or
selections in the FILE drop-down list.

CREATING A NEW TRACE LIST

Click the NEW icon on the toolbar or select FILE>NEW. The pop-up
window that appears allows the user to select a new TRACE LIST
or HEADER TEMPLATE. Note that the HEADER TEMPLATE feature is
grayed out, meaning that it is available only in fully functional
Anritsu NetWorks/OTDR software.

Click the TRACE LIST button in the NEW window. Now the program
will initiate a new document and allow the user to add trace
files to the new TRACE LIST.

ADDING TRACE FILES TO A NEW TRACE LIST

Click the ADD icon on the toolbar or select TRACE>ADD. A dialog
box will appear (Add Traces to Trace List) allowing the user to
browse to the location of the desired trace files. Select one or
more traces to view and click OPEN. The selected trace files
will now be added to the TRACE LIST. The program depicts these
trace files as entries in the TRACE LIST window on the left side
of the program window.

VIEWING TRACES

To view a trace from an open TRACE LIST, select the desired trace
and click the DISPLAY icon on the toolbar or select TRACE>DISPLAY
(CTRL+D) or simply double-click the trace filename. TraceView will
allow users to display and overlay up to two traces at a time.
Once the desired traces are displayed in the graph window, control
over window elements such as scroll bars, cursors, etc. is
available to the user.

HELP SCREENS

Application help is available by selecting HELP>HELP TOPICS from
the main menu. A Anritsu NetWorks/OTDR help file is launched to
guide the user.

Note: The help associated with this program (TraceView) is greater
in scope than the program permits. This means that the program will
offer guidance on features unavailable to the user of this program.
The user can gain a greater understanding of the scope of the
Anritsu NetWorks/OTDR software suite by exploring the HELP TOPICS
in this fashion.

USER'S AND QUICK REFERENCE GUIDES

A user's guide and quick reference guide are included in this zip
file. These documents are for the complete Anritsu NetWorks/OTDR
product and are included with TraceView to provide the user with
documentation about basic program features. TraceView exists as a
subset of the functionality of Anritsu NetWorks/OTDR, therefore
the manual and quick reference guide will describe features
unavailable to a user of TraceView.

TraceView differs from Anritsu NetWorks/OTDR in that TraceView
only supports:

. Recall and overlay up to two traces(CMA 5000,CMA4000/8800/40,
          TD-3000, PK7500, 383, Bellcore GR-196, Telcordia SR-4731,
          TD-1000, TD-2000, TD-9980, TD-9960, TD-9950).
. Support standard and custom headers.
. Trace List file defines the traces to be processed.
. Print Current View - header, trace, and analysis results.
. Graph up to 2 traces with 4 view modes : Display from Origin,
A Cursor, B Cursor, and Anywhere.
. Graph features include axes, legend, A/B cursor, zoom, scroll,
shift, stack, LSA cursors, and event symbols.
. User control over parameter preferences such as distance units.
. Full manual measurements using dual cursors, for loss modes of
          Splice, Two-point, Two-point Attenuation Corrected,
Two-point LSA, dB/Km, dB/Km LSA, ORL from Origin or
          ORL A-to-B.
. Display and edit trace parameters, headers, and events.
. View and print CMA 5000 and CMA4000 Power Meter files.
      . On-line help.

TraceView is a viewing program with limited functionality and does not
allow modified traces or power meter readings to be saved.

SAMPLE TRACES

The trace files 5ITGNAO.001-6 and 5NAOITG.001-6, included with the
TraceView program, are actual traces of 6 fibers on a cable and
may be used to exercise the various features of TraceView.

The approximate splice points, in km, for the cable is as follows :

ITG to NAO NAO to ITG
      ---------- ----------
          6.88 79.82
         14.45 72.12
         26.73 59.96
         33.02 53.61
